What is a GUID ?

GUID is an acronym which stands for 'Globally Unique Identifier'. A GUID is a 128-bit identifier used to uniquely distinguish resources in computer systems without requiring a central registration authority. The term GUID was popularized by Microsoft in COM and .NET, while the broader industry standard refers to them as UUID (Universally Unique Identifier).

How unique is a GUID ?

For random (Version 4) GUIDs, 122 of the 128 bits are randomly generated (with 6 bits reserved for version and variant metadata). This provides 2¹²² (approximately 5.3 × 10³⁶) unique combinations. Based on the mathematical Birthday Paradox, if you were to generate 1,000,000,000 GUIDs per second continuously for 85 years, the probability of generating even a single duplicate would only be 50%. Furthermore, to reach even a one-in-a-billion (0.0000001%) chance of finding a single duplicate, you would need to generate approximately 103 trillion GUIDs.

How to use GUID Generator
